Around 1970, the workshops taught by Joan Turner and Alfonso Unanue in Las Condes were left without subsidy. Then, Patricio Bunster, director of the Dance Department at the University of Chile, offered them rehearsal rooms and other elements so they could continue with their initiative. The group then began to be called Ballet Popular, and made its first presentation that same year, within the framework of the Unidad Popular campaign for the 1970 elections where the candidate was Salvador Allende. The Popular Ballet put itself at the service of the electoral campaign, which meant performing hundreds of performances in Santiago and in rural areas, taking dance throughout the country, touring squares and towns, under all types of conditions and circumstances.
